Participation Policy:
The Participation grade for this class will be determined by two factors: Class Attendance and Homework Completion.
Attendance:
Students are expected to attend class on a daily basis. However, 3 unexcused absences are allowed without consequences. more than 3 unexcused absences will result in 5 percentage points subtracted from one’s Attendance grade. (i.e., 4 absences = 95%, 5 absences = 90%, etc.). An absence will be considered excused if the student provides documentation of sickness, injury, or a family emergency. If you are unsure if an absence will be considered excused, ask the instructor first! 10 or more unexcused absences will result in a score of ZERO for the student's entire participation grade.
Homework:
There will be homework assigned for each class period and a portion of this homework will be collected and graded each class. The collected homework will be graded on a scale from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). The cumulative score of points for the semester will constitute the homework portion of the participation grade.

Tardiness:

Discussion Board Postings:
Participation in online discussions is an important expectation of this course. Students are expected to offer comments, questions, and replies to the discussion questions that have been posed for each week as well as to classmate postings. Students are expected to actively participate in EACH week's discussion throughout the semester. The faculty role is as an observer and facilitator. I will be reading all messages and I will participate in the discussion as appropriate. Students may work ahead on the discussion boards but posting on past week's boards will not allow for stimulating discussions with your classmates.
Postings will be evaluated on the quality of the postings and the degree that the postings promote discussion with classmates. Participation on the discussion threads for all 9 weeks is required and postings will be evaluated per board on the scale below. Students can earn the 3 additional points by showing good effort to engage classmates in discussion by responding to their posts each week. The discussion board assignment will be worth a total of 30 points. All posts must be posted to the Discussion Board by 11:59 PM each Saturday to receive full credit.

Make-up Quizzes/Tests:
Only in the case of a demonstrated medical reason (doctor's note required), other emergency (signed letter required), or religious holiday (14 day notice required) will a make-up quiz/test be granted. Except in emergencies, make-up quizzes for excused absences are to be taken BEFORE the absence. If you miss a quiz or an exam due to an emergency, you have up to two days to contact me and make arrangements. If you are an athlete, you must make me aware of scheduling conflicts during the first two weeks of the semester.
